4 primary music schemes you’ve never heard of

Kapow or Charanga? Sing Up or Sparkyard? These questions get asked almost every day on the various Facebook groups for music teachers. And the answer is that they’re all great options… but they’re not the only options!

There is now a plethora of teaching schemes for primary music to choose from, and rightly so. All schools are different, all teachers are different, all children are different. That means that however good an individual scheme is, it’s never going to be the right fit for every single school in the country. So, with that in mind, and with no disrespect to any of the other options out there, here are four other schemes worth your attention.

Aurora Classroom
Aurora Classroom introduces your pupils to orchestral music through fully-planned units for EYFS, Primary, Secondary and SEND settings, and the option to build your own units from their extensive activity and audio libraries, all recorded by the ground-breaking and internationally-acclaimed Aurora Orchestra. Explore the resource here.

Dabbledoo
Dabbledoo provides primary schools with the resources, training and support to deliver music, art and drama in the classroom. Already used extensively by schools in Ireland, dabbledoo has now launched a range of free music and arts packs for primary school teachers in the UK. Find out more here.

DaCapo Primary
DaCapo Primary Music’s Kodály-inspired approach uses singing, movement, listening and practical activities to develop pupils’ musical skills and understanding. The programme includes structured lessons, interactive resources, audio and supporting materials, with progression built in throughout. Find out more here.

Groove ‘n’ Play
Groove’n’play’s interactive fun and funky whole class music programmes are high-quality curricular resources devised to support the development of a child’s musical talents and skills as performer, creator and listener. The groove’n’play programmes feature specialised pathways that cater to KS1, KS2 and early KS3 across a variety of instruments. Explore them here.

If you want the opportunity to chat to these scheme providers, you can meet them in person on the Music Education Solutions & Friends stand at the Music & Drama Education Expo in February, alongside the equally brilliant Melsonic and The Sixteen. And if you want tips and advice for selecting from any one of the myriad of scheme options out there, come along to my session on How to choose the perfect music scheme for your Primary School at 11.50am on Thursday 11th February in The Workshop!
